The Story : Stardate 46379.1. The Cardassians are withdrawing from the planet Bajor, and the Provisional Bajoran Government has asked Starfleet to help rebuilding the devastated planet and to make sure the Cardassians don't change their minds and return. Commander Sisko is put in charge of a station - Deep Space Nine - the Cardassians left in orbit. The commander who lost his wife three years ago, during the Borg attack at Wolf 359, is not looking forward to the assignment, that includes preparing Bajor for intrance into the Federation. On top of this, he finds that not all the Bajorans are pleased with Starfleet's presence. They feel that the Provisional Government has given their newfound freedom away and as far as they are concerned, Starfleet is no different than the Cardassians. The discovery of the first stable wormhole, however, brings the Cardassians back to the station and forces both the Starfleet officers and the Bajorans to work together.

The Story : Dr. Bashir is excited to meet Garak, the last Cardassian aboard Deep Space Nine and a rumored spy. He rushes to tell the rest of the crew, but they are busy rescuing a Bajoran, Tahna Los, whose ship has been attacked by Cardassians. Tahna and Kira instantly recognize each other from their days in the Bajoran underground. The Cardassians hail Sisko and demand he turn Tahna over to them, saying he is a member of a Bajoran terrorist group called the Khon-Ma. However, Tahna renounces terrorism and asks for asylum, and thanks to Kira's impassioned plea to a wary Sisko, he gets it.

The Story : Stardate 46421.5. The adjustment period aboard Deep Space Nine continues. O'Brien's wife Keiko misses the Enterprise and her career as a botanist. Sisko's son, Jake, plagued by loneliness, eases his boredom by befriending a rowdy Ferengi boy named Nog. Meanwhile, Odo is faced with a more pressing problem when he spies Ibudan, a Bajoran he once arrested for murder, gambling in Quark's. He attempts to rid the station of the criminal, first by ordering him to leave and later by asking Sisko to throw him off the station, but neither effort proves successful. However, Odo soon gets his wish despite this lack of cooperation when Ibudan is found stabbed to death in a Holosuite. Soon, a number of Bajoran citizens suspect Odo himself killed the man. Led by Zayra and their own prejudices, the suspicious Bajorans take on a personal mission against Odo.

The Story : Stardate 46423.7. A virus designed by the Bajorans 18 years earlier to infect the Cardassians is inadvertently released into DS9's food replicators and atmosphere, eventually infecting everybody on board the station. Once Bashir diagnoses the virus, it becomes a race against the clock to find a cure before the incubation period expires and the virus begins killing people.

But when another ship comes looking for Tosk, it's revealed that he is the prey in a highly honored cultural hunt.

The Story : Stardate 46531.2. When a Runabout crew finds Q's former traveling companion Vash in the Gamma Quadrant, Q comes to the station in an attempt to convince her to rejoin him. Vash and Quark plan an auction for rare Gamma Quadrant artifacts Vash has collected during her two years on the other side of the wormhole. One of the artifacts turns out to be an embryonic lifeform trying to return to the Gamma Quadrant, placing the station in danger as it is pulled into the wormhole.

Now an extradition hearing may decide whether Jadzia can be held responsible for the actions of a previous life. For some reason, however, Dax refuses to tell Sisko what happened back then.

It is believed that Vantika may have transferred his consciousness into Kajada's brain, but it really turns out to be Bashir.

The Story : Quark cheats the first visitors from the Gamma Quadrant in a game of Dabo, so the aliens decide to give Quark a lesson in fair play with a game that places Sisko, Kira, Dax, and Bashir in the middle of a surreal fantasy situation as the players. In order to see the DS9 officers to safety, Quark must play the game through - gambling with lives instead of money.

Croden capitalizes on Odo's loneliness by telling him a number of "Changeling tales" that may or may not be part of his web of dissembling lies - hoping to take advantage of the constable's Achilles heel. He tempts Odo by telling the shape-shifter he can put the changeling in contact with others like himself.

The Story : Sisko, Kira, and Bashir take Kai Opaka through the wormhole for a brief excursion, but their Runabout is shot down by an automated satellite system when investigating a nearby planet. Opaka is killed in the crash. Meanwhile, the survivors find themselves in the middle of two warring factions of a penal colony. However, after Kai Opaka mysteriously comes back to live, it is discovered that no one on this colony ever dies. Their cells have been re-engineered to keep them fighting a futile battle with no possible victory for either side.

This forces Kira to take a good look at how much she has changed since her alliance with the Federation.

The characters, however, are revealed as being alien visitors who want to learn more about humanity.

The Story : A Cardassian named Marritza comes to the station as a passenger on a passing ship. Kira promptly arrests him for being a war criminal and throws him in a cell since the man has a medical condition that he could only have acquired at a Bajoran labor camp named Gallitep. As far as Kira and the Bajorans are concerned, any Cardassian at Gallitep is guilty. While a picture seems to indicate that Marritza is really Gul Darheel, the man who ran Gallitep, it eventually turns out that Marritza was posing as Darheel trying to martyr himself so the Cardassian government will be forced to acknowledge its guilt for the Occupation.

The Story : Bajoran Vedek Winn publicly denounces the classroom teachings of Keiko O'Brien's school. The result is a sudden rift between the Bajoran and Federation peoples, undermining everything Sisko hopes to accomplish. Sisko attempts to seek help from another Bajoran religious establishment, introducing Vedek Bareil, who cannot immediately offer help. The bombing of Keiko's school complicates matters, and is enough to convince Bareil to come to the station to offer his religious perspectives on the matter. It turns out that the entire situation was engineered to kill Bareil who is Winn's opposing candidate for Kai.
