Meanwhile, Saunders' employers, led by Karen Bell, find out he's using Genomax facilities to come up with a "cure" for the mutant gene-procedure. Donna was one test subject, and was killed by the faulty serum. Saunders decides to "cure" himself of his mutation, and starts dying. Bell tries to capture Saunders, but Mutant X defeats her and Eckhart punishes her for her failure by making her another test subject. Saunders dies, leaving a remorseful Shalimar. Mutant X gets to him first, getting him away from Renfield, who is forced to undergo torturous "retraining" at the hands of Eckhart because of his failure. Meanwhile, Kilohertz/Sterling comes to believe that Mutant X are a danger, since they try to sedate and capture him when he starts raving about throwing the world into chaos. He manages to escape, and they recapture him, but he takes over the Sanctuary systems. Adam manages to expel him from the system, and Brennan scrambles the comm units so Kilohertz can't get back in. Barry flees to the GSA, but is captured by Renfield (who has the ability to "freeze" people), and put into the tanks for further experimentation.

Cast : Anthony Lemke (Charles Marlowe)

The Story : When Brennan is dealing with the Underground, one of its sub-leaders, Rick, comes down with a disease that causes his powers to flare out of control. Word comes in of other mutants suffering from the plague, and while trying to help one of them, Adam and Shalimar meet Charles Marlowe, a mutant with the power of invulnerability. They and Eckhart make a deal to work together to cure the plague, which Marlowe isn't too happy with. Obsessed with death, Marlowe hangs around the dying mutants trying to see what they see at the moment of death. Jesse and Emma are accidentally infected by the dying Rick and go into comas as well. Adam figures out that Marlowe's invulnerability is supra-rapid cell regeneration, and extract his unique DNA to implement a cure. This makes Marlowe "vulnerable" again. They need Eckhart's computer system which only a grateful Marlowe can gain them access to. Marlowe tries to hold off Eckhart by bluffing, but Mason sees through it and Marlowe is killed. The remaining mutants are cured.

Original title : Lit Fuse
First Aired : 17.11.2001 (USA) 01.01.2003 (FRANCE)
Director : John Bell
Writing credits : Elizabeth Keyishian & David L. Newman From a Story by Tom Fudge
Cast : Mark Lutz (Eric Tanner), Moya O'Connell (Ashley Elliott), Gordon Currie (Neil Cross)

The Story : Ashley and her boyfriend Eric are on the runner from a bounty hunter, Cross. Ashley is an "elemental" who absorbs energy: in this case, electrical. She escapes although Eric is captured. Mutant X detects the power outage and goes after her. She goes to recover Eric from Cross, who has made a deal with Eckhart to capture her. Eckhart tries to double-cross Cross, and Mutant X grab Ashley, although Eric remains a prisoner of Cross. Back at Sanctuary, Ashley and Brennan are electromagnetically "attracted" to each other, and the group figures out that Eric is in cahoots with Cross to get hold of Ashley. Ashley literally absorbs Brennan, making herself potentially very dangerous and liable to explode the next time she draws energy. Cross shoots Eric once he has succeeded in luring Ashley back in, cuts a new deal with Eckhart, then goes to charge up Ashley at a power plant. The team manages to interfere, restoring Brennan to physical corporeality, and they get away with Ashley, who goes into the Mutant Underground.

Director : John Bell
Writing credits : Howard Chaykin
Cast : Reagan Pasternak (Toni Quintana), Joy Tanner (Kendra Makovoy)

The Story : Jesse is in love with Toni, a computer hacker and new mutant. Eckhart, concerned about the fact that Proxy Blue knows about him, wants the virtual newscaster silenced. He employs Kendra, who gets close to Toni and then kidnaps her and puts her to work for Genomex duplicating Proxy Blue with Eckhart's message. Toni slipped a virus into Sanctuary's computers, mostly out of curiosity and the challenge. However, Genomex may be able to trace Sanctuary through her equipment: the computers may or may not have been fried by a stray blast from Brennan. Mutant X has never been able to penetrate Genomex in simulations. Toni manages to slip out the weakness in Genomex's defenses via one of her fake Proxy transmissions, and the team manages to rescue her and leave Eckhart's computers crippled. Toni joins the underground as a wandering troubleshooter, although she and Jesse still plan to get together.

Unknown to them, the head of the FBI team, Wendy Stone, is a GSA plant who reports to Eckhart. As they investigate further, they find out that Joshua's mother had him kidnapped, to keep her husband from turning their son over to Eckhart. Fortunately, Eckhart ships Joshua off to another GSA base for research into his powers, and Brennan and Jesse rescue the kid again with a little help from Joshua as he begins to master his powers. At the end the family are reconciled and Eckhart is denied control of another New Mutant.

Cast : Andrew Gillies (Dr. Harrison), Anne Openshaw (Angel Dorn), Ralf Moeller (Lt. Beau Longstreet)

The Story : Shalimar intercepts three ferals trying to blow up Biocorp. She stops their mission but they escape, one of them seemingly ill. Mutant X identifies them through a tattoo: they are members of Dark Star, an internatinal anti-terrorist unit. The gang tracks them down - the ill man is now dead, and the other two have no idea what a "new mutant" is. They were sent to Bogata on a mission for Biocorp, which turned out to be an experiment by Eckhart involving a rare plant that causes people to become new mutations. The two soldiers, Beau and Angel, are the last mutated survivors: the rest died, and even Angel is slowly dying as well. Eckhart needs a living subject to complete the experiment. While Adam races to save Angel, Beau and Shalimar break into Biocorp to capture a plant sample. Jesse escapes with it, but the other two are captured and taken to Genomex. Shalimar breaks free and helps Beau to escape, Adam manages to come up with a cure, and Brennan destroys the remaining plant samples at Biocorp.

Adam tracks the gene sequencer to an old girlfriend and new mutant, Danielle. She only stole the resequencer to attract his attention, and leaves until they can rendezvous later. Then a new mutant/feral working for Eckart, Aldus, shows up, beats the snot out of Adam, and take the sequencer. Meanwhile, Emma and Shalimar have tracked Danielle to her home and found she has a daughter with the same invisiblity powers. Danielle's powers are out of control, and Adam needs the gene reseqencer to cure her. Adam temporarily stabilizes Danielle, who goes to visit Eckhart, whom she has a history with. Meanwhile, Emma uses her powers to get the resequencer from Aldus. Eckhart tries to take Danielle prisoner, but Adam, Brennan and Jesse defeat his men and Aldus. Using her daughter's gene sequence, Adam manages to stabilize Danielle. The Story : Maddie Conlen, an old New Mutant friend of Brennan's with minimal power, lures him and a tagalong Emma into a trap set by GSA agents. Maddie displays a vast increase in power, and her new "pulse" interacts with Brennan's lightning blast, somehow splitting Emma into two separate entities. Unaware of the split, Brennan escapes with one of the Emma's, who soon proves to be somewhat of a worrywart, acting hesitant and unsure. Meanwhile, the other Emma is taken in by the GSA agents, and she quickly negotiates a deal with Eckhart to betray Mutant X and bring him Conlen, whom Genomex had genetically augmented as part of an experiment. She does so, but then reveals it's all of a ruse: she plans on bringing down Eckhart from the inside. Adam concludes that if the two Emmas are not reunited, they'll both die, but the ruthless Emma doesn't care. She frees Maddie and two try to put Genomex into a stasis field (which would kill the currently imprisoned New Mutants). The rest of Mutant X manages to thwart her and take her into captivity, where they reunite the two Emmas when Maddie and Brennan recreate the power pulse that split her. Maddie, who was forced to trap Brennan because her mutancy required surgery so she could stay alive, goes into the underground.

Cast : Art Hindle (Noah Kilmartin), Chick Reid (Nicole Carter)

The Story : Jesse runs across his father Noah, who is on the run from a security contingent from Nexogen. The head of Nexxogen, Nicole Carter, asks Eckhart for help and he puts his newest wanna-be, a New Mutant named Porter with super-hearing abilities, on the case. Noah has slipped Jesse a disk with the important information, but as we find out, Noah plans on blackmailing Carter with the info. The rest of Mutant X figures this out when Emma and Shalomar sneak into Nexxogen and download vital information. Jesse doesn't want to believe them, but eventually figures it out for himself. In the ensuing battle, Porter's sound baffles are removed and he is deafened by full-intensity gunfire at close range while the rest of his security team is defeated. Director : Andrew Potter
Writing credits : Elizabeth Keyishian
Cast : Emily Hampshire (Charlotte Cooke), Joseph Scoren (Lynch), Rob Stefaniuk (Skeet Vossberg)

The Story : Charlotte Cooke is a New Mutant with the ability to infect people by touch with a toxin that reverses their "moral compass". The effect only lasts on New Mutants for about a minute, but on normals the affect seems to be permanent. She is also the daughter of an old friend of Adam's who sold secrets, and Adam was forced to expose to the authorities. Charlotte and her friend Steve are on the run when the GSA tries to capture them. Steve (a minor league new mutant), is captured but Mutant X rescues Charlotte. She wants to join up, but when they turn her down she "infects" Shalimar and Jesse and uses the distraction to escape. With Steve's help, Eckhart's enforcer Lynch captures her and they convince her to help them against her father's betrayer. She agrees and infects Adam, turning him evil. He knocks out Emma and imprisons the others in a force field impervious to their powers, then knocks out Eckhart and frees Charlotte for his own nefarious purposes. The team manages to escape and confront him. He knows all of their weaknesses, taking down Brennan with a water hose and Jesse when he has to breathe and turn off his density powers. Adam is ready to kill Shalimar when Emma talks him out of it long enough for a repentant Charlotte (whom Eckhart has told he was responsible for her father's betrayal), to give him a new dose of her toxin and reverse the effects of the original dose.

He takes her out back and proceeds to suck the life-energy out of her, a process that Brennan interrupts. Caleb flees. Eckhart assigns his newest New Mutant agent, Pamela Fries (an Elemental who can alter her body temperature and the surroundings), to go after Caleb, who they've determined is connected to the serial killings of several other young, female New Mutants. Mutant X goes back to the bar and confront Caleb, who is hit by a GSA car driven by Pamela. She is apparently in cahoots with Caleb and rescues him from the morgue, where he walks out under his own power. It turns out Caleb is a "vampire", and can resurrect himself from the energies he takes from young female New Mutants. Apparently psychically bonded to him, Emma returns to the bar yet again, and is captured along with Pamela. Pamela is able to escape her chains with an empathic boost from Emma, but is energy-drained and killed by Caleb. Caleb then drain-kills Emma as well! Adam figures out that Caleb may be permanently killed if he is killed a second time after his resurrection, before he has a chance to feed. Shalimar goes to the club and "kills" Caleb, who gets up only to be electrocuted and permanently killed by Brennan. With Caleb's death, the life force of his last two victims is restored and Emma and Pamela wake up.
