Hammer Films had a reputation for turning out cheap remakes of classic horror films. Well, maybe they were inexpensive by film standards, but they had class. The plot lines were often altered somewhat, as is the case here, but there was a kind of sober intelligence in the scripts, intensity in the acting (especially, the incomparable Peter Cushing), and generally good production values. This film is typical of the Hammer productions. It is quite different from the 1930s Frankenstein films starring Boris Karloff -- so different, in fact, that there is little point in comparing them. But taken on its own merits, this is classy piece of work.
