Strange little flowers appear in San Francisco. Their origin is alien. Bacteriums from another planet have crossed space to fail on Earth and to take root on other plants.

The following day of their appearance, Elisabeth Driscoll notices that her friend's behavior Geoffrey Howell changes brutally. He becomes distant, cold and exempt of feelings. For her, it makes no doubt that Geoffrey is not Geoffrey. This brutal metamorphoses does not seem unique and several persons make the same verification at peoples of their surrounding. Elisabeth tells her fears to her colleague and friend, Matthew Bennell working like Elisabeth at the hygiene service of the Health Ministry. The former incredulous proposes her to meet the Doctor David Kibner, a famous psychiatrist Bennell knows well. Kibner noticed a recrudescence of paranoia but quickly concludes to a kind of collective hallucination.

Nevertheless, Bennell must admit it when he witnesses a phenomenon for the most particular at Jack and Nancy Bellicec's home. He discovers a body, or rather an outline of body in full mutation that does not possesses any fingerprint. The most surprising is that this phoetus of adult size possesses Jack's face.

They quickly understand that monsters coming from pods of alien plants are in the process to take possession of human bodies by pumping their vital energy during their sleep. Matthew flies at Elizabeth's home and saves her from a certain cloning. Jack, Nancy, Elizabeth and Matthew run to escape the horde of residents going after them...

Elizabeth and Matthew find refuge in a laboratory of the hygiene service where they spend the biggest part of the night attempting not to fall asleep while outside residents of San Francisco unload trucks from malevolent pods. Caught by the mutant now including David and Jack, they escape by climbing on board a truck that leads them in a greenhouse where are cultivated pods. After an instant of inattention, Elizabeth succumbs to the fatigue and Matthew cannot prevent the mutation of his beloved who gives the alert. Matthew destroys the greenhouse before to escape, but he will no more escape his own horrible destiny.
