Quatermass 2

(Quatermass 2)

April 27, 2005

I confess to loving these films with Brian Donleavy starring as Quatermass, even though many people who saw the original British TV series felt he was miscast, and far too belligerent in the role. Maybe so, but I have always a special fondness for this film. There is an engrossing mystery as a secret research installation is discovered, a gripping adventure as Quatermass and colleagues investigate, a horrifying discovery at the climax. I like the stark black-and-white look of the film, devoid of splashy special effects, and I appreciate its gritty intensity as the story is told with almost no irrelevent distractions.
