As with the other Quatermass film starring Brian Donleavy, this is a tautly written, gritty, and intense story with no frills and no distractions. An astronaut returns to Earth after being out of contact for awhile, and appears dazed. Gradually, he is being taken over by something that has invaded his body. Richard Wordsworth, with no dialogue to speak, plays the doomed astronaut with dignity and despair as he metamorphoses into a monster that is eventually trapped and destroyed.
